What's your name?
My name is Ioana Muresan. All my service users know me as Joanna but my colleagues refer to me as “the legendary carer.”
How many service users do you look after in an average day?
In an average day I have 7-8 service users I look after with much care and love. Some of them have 4 calls a day, others only one.
What are the best parts of your job? What do you like most about it?
The best part of my job is the smile on my service users’ face. I am happy as long as they remain content and joyful. Truth to be told: when I turn to work each morning my soul sings! I am very happy to be of assistance! I never thought that I would feel so fulfilled working as a carer!
What is the biggest challenge you were faced with in your care assistant role? How did you overcome it?
When I first started as a carer the only relationship with elderly I had was caring for my mother-in-law, I was a carer without even knowing it. That was the biggest challenge. Slowly but surely all my service users became my own big family. I overcame my fears and challenges by growing together with my service users, understanding and respecting their habits, tastes or preferences.
What do you do to relax after a long day's work? Do you have any hobbies?
I find playing my acoustic guitar in the nearby park the most relaxing way to end my day. In terms of hobbies I love travelling and my dream is to get to visit the Great Wall of China and The Pyramids. The complexity and legends around these two World Wonders really intrigue me.
Tell us a random/funny/weird thing about you, that makes you unique!
I was working for the first time at one of our service users, covering for one of my colleagues and getting ready to call it a day. I normally end each of my visits with a reassuring question like: “Is there anything I can do for you before I leave”? Or “If everything is alright with you I am going to leave now!” In a very humorous tone, despite her dead serious grimace, my service user replied: “NO, you cannot leave!” Speechless, I still have managed to ask: Why? The answer was the best compliment I have ever received: Because I really like your company and I want you to stay longer. It is worth getting old to be cared for by Joanna! That’s the funny moment that made me ”legendary” within my colleagues.
